What is the first thing you imagine when you think of gin?

At The Hamper Lounge we like to think back to the glamorous gin palaces of Victorian times, which gave rise to pubs as we know them today.

We also like to think of the Gin Craze before that, and the disreputable dens of vice and infamy in which the working classes gathered to drown their misery.

Unable to bear squalor and terrible factory conditions, many poor remained permanently inebriated and lived very short lives as a result. Gin shops obligingly offered competitive prices, promising to get you “dead drunk” for two pennies and even provided clean straw for you sleep the alcohol off there and then. Gin was especially favoured among women, who took it with warm water to “soothe the nerves”, which has lead to it being dubbed “Mother's Ruin”.

Children drank almost as much as adults. Mothers and nurses often gave gin to babies to quieten them, sparking an early addiction. Many children were born deformed thanks to gin; it was also the main reason behind death rates at the time exceeding birth rates.

Several attempts to regulate the production and consumption of gin with various “Gin Acts” failed miserably. Those desperate to escape their misery and those eager for a quick buck always found ways to work around bans and regulations.

Eventually, though, tougher taxes, a ban on distilling grain, as well as stricter quality laws, brought the situation under control. Alexander Gordon, the founder of Gordon's Dry London Gin, redeemed gin's reputation somewhat through his strict commitment to quality. Gin palaces, the first of which opened in the 1820s, further helped reinvent gin as a pleasant indulgence one enjoys in the company of friends, rather than the foul and deadly Mother's Ruin that it used to be.

Gin has evolved from jenever, the juniper-flavoured traditional liquor of the Netherlands and Belgium. Hardly anyone thinks of it in association with Mother's Ruin now. We rather think of it in association with tonic, and perhaps a bit of lemon or lime along with it, too. On the rocks!

Prestat were founded all the way back in 1902 in London, and have been hand-crafting all their chocolates for over a century now. Talk about tradition! It would have certainly been a little anti-climactic if they hadn't taken away a thing or two about making chocolate from all those years of experience.

As things stand, they have been awarded two royal warrants as purveyors of chocolate to Queen Elizabeth II and Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, and are one of the most well-known chocolate makers in the UK. In fact, The Economist has nominated the royalty-approved chocolatier as one of the world's top three chocolate shops in 2003.

Throughout their long history, Prestat have had many noteworthy customers, including the actress Sarah Bernhardt, Princess Diana and Stephen Fry. It is said they were the inspiration behind Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Dahl has even immortalised their name in another novel of his, My Uncle Oswald. Aimed at adults, the novel relates the adventures of a seductress who inserts aphrodisiac into Prestat truffles she presents to the rich geniuses she intends to seduce.

While we certainly hope Prestat chocolates have never be used towards such sinister purposes in real life – it is sacrilege to use the power of chocolate for evil – there is definitely something evocative about the idea of a seductress resorting to chocolate as a weapon of choice.

Prestat products are so well-known and loved, they can be used for almost any purpose. But their magic is perhaps best applied on Christmas day, when a sleepy child opens a neatly wrapped box to find pure pleasure, lovingly captured and neatly packaged, bursting to be released back into the wild.

We aim to present as diverse and varied an offering as possible, using only the best of the best. This is why we've chosen an array of suppliers who, while sharing the same dedication to maintaining a high quality standard, differ in the ways they approach creating luxury products.

Few things speak quality chocolate louder than the House of Dorchester, supplier of luxury chocolates to many hotels, restaurants and shops in the UK. Based in Dorchester, they have been founded in 1963, as, according to them, it was a lot easier to start making quality chocolate themselves rather than finding someone to supply it! Starting out as a small shop called “The Dorset Maid” on the high street in Dorchester, initially they had just one lady hand-crafting the chocolates in the shop. Very soon, thanks to word of mouth, they had to significantly increase the amount of people creating their chocolates. Today, a small shop is no longer enough for the scale of their production, and the House of Dorchester operates out of a factory on the Duchy of Cornwall's Poundbury Estate in Dorchester.

Another quintessentially British supplier, they place great value upon their heritage and core values like quality and service. You can hardly go wrong when picking a gift for yourself (or someone just as important in your life!) from one of their collections. The packaging they choose for their products exudes quality, solidity, trustworthiness.

The House of Dorchester is more about good old tried and tested recipes rather than bold experimentation. Items from their collections could make great gifts for a business partner or a valued guest. It is a truth universally acknowledged that chocolate is the non-verbal form of “thank you” and “please come again”.

Imagine a bad day, when nothing is going your way. Imagine your train is late, and it is of course raining. It is Monday, your boss is less than understanding and your payday is next century.

Then you come back from lunch to find a thoughtful friend has unexpectedly left a small box of chocolates on your desk. Your payday is still a century away, but in that moment of discovering the gift, you feel treasured and loved. There is something terribly endearing about receiving chocolates – in fact, many unlicensed medical practitioners believe it to be the best recipe for instant happiness, short of an orgasm.

This is the sort of feeling we are aiming for with our gifts and hampers. There are many tiny details which have to be just right to create it – chocolate orgasm is a fleeting thing, and a teeny tiny whit off may spoil the whole thing. Apart from the flavour of the chocolate itself, the presentation has to be just right. Tesco's finest just won't cut it, no matter how fine it may really be – you are aiming for that luxury, exclusive feel.

This is why we have chosen to work with Coco Chocolatier. They are an artisan chocolatier based in quirky, artsy Edinburgh. They offer unusual chocolate flavours (gin & tonic dark chocolate, anyone? Drinking chocolate with lemongrass?) presented in beautiful wrapping. They are also quite happy to work with you to create custom chocolate flavours tailored to your liking. Your intended recipient wouldn't just be getting a bog-standard box of chocolates – you could surprise them with a completely unexpected flavour! Coco Chocolatier are unapologetically innovative and daring, and we are hoping to create many unforgettable experiences with their help.
